Table of contents

S73&400 IO Server is dedicated to communicate directly with SIEMENS PLC (S7-300 & S7-400).
The eWON will connect directly to the PLC’s MPI or Profibus interface.

WARNING: The MPI/Profibus interface require a special serial port hardware!

Also S7-1200 !

New: From firmware 5.4 and up, eWON manages multiple Ethernet (ISOTCP) to MPI/Profibus connections.
So it is now possible to use eWON transparent Gateway ISOTCP to MPI feature as gateway for an HMI application and simultaneously make a remote maintenance on the same PLC through eWON.

Notes:
1 A brief disturbance on the Profibus network can be caused by this eWON model when switching on/off. For a stand alone device, this is not a problem. But if the Profibus network is used for intercommunication between Profibus Master and Slave devices, then the Siemens CPU might change into STOP mode if the network errors are not handled inside the CPU program (OB85 & OB86).
2 For remote maintenance over the Internet, an eWON with VPN capabilities must be used to allow a complete remote maintenance of the PLC.

Limitations: The eWON remote maintenance solution for the MPI and Profibus devices is based on the use of a transparent gateway between the ISOTCP and the MPI/Profibus protocols. This solution has the advantage that it is transparent for the Siemens software and the involved PLC. A drawback of this solution is that the Operator Panels cannot be accessed from remote on their MPI or Profibus interfaces, because the transparent gateway cannot be used for these devices. So to make a remote maintenance on an Operator Panel the Ethernet interface of the OP has to be used OR use eVCOM to make remote maintenance of Operator Panel (see eWON2001+eVCOM MPI-teleservice.pdf ).

Routing possibilities: eWON allows the routing from Ethernet to the MPI or the Profibus Network on the first level.
Following routing is accepted:
Polling on the MPI Network through an Ethernet device
Polling on the Profibus Network through an Ethernet device
When the eWON transparent gateway Ethernet to MPI/Profibus is used, the MPI/Profibus Network must be the final destination.
If your software does not allow to specify the network node (MPI or Profibus) of the device to be reached through eWON, then the «Destination MPI/Profibus node» field can be configured in eWON to access to the device.
